Where did you grow up?
Born in Mexico, family immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area when I was around 2 years old.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My kindergarten and 1st grade teacher because they always saw my potential. After that, my science teachers that made the subject matter interesting and fun!
What inspired you to pursue a career in STEM/Healthcare?
It just happened, originally, I had dreams of becoming an architect so I could help people – by designing homes. Now I feel as I am helping people but in a different way.
What were your moments of fear/challenges in your career?
First starting, feeling like I needed to fit into a mold or not bringing my whole self to work.
What are some of the innovations in science that you are most excited about?
An increase in systems thinking, where we focus on addressing multiple topics at once – for example, I am very interested in the use of the One Health approach that acknowledges the interconnections between our own (human) health, animals, plants, and our shared environment. I am also excited about innovation through the lens of sustainability and environmental justice.
What’s next for you?/What would you like to do when you “grow up’? (retire, etc.)/
what is something you hope to accomplish in the future?
I think this is a big step forward in what I would like to accomplish in the future – to be a cheerleader for those that come after me – by helping to guide the way so others may excel within STEM and beyond.
Personal style/fashion tip?
Punk Rock STEMINST, I will forever have punk rock roots – and I think that has been a strength for me as I have continued my own STEM journey and career. The ethos of punk has always been (to me) about being bold, fully yourself, and not being afraid or perhaps being afraid but still going against the grain with your convictions. I think it has also allowed many to be empowered with the ‘do it yourself’ mentality.
Current book/book you love?
Absolute favorite book would be ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (so many life lessons and topics in one book); and most recently The 5AM Club by Robin Sharma.
