While women comprise 48% of the U.S. workforce, they only represent about 35% of the STEM workforce. This contrast is especially stark, considering women earned 53% of STEM college degrees in 2018. As healthcare and STEM-based companies seek to build a more diverse workforce, internships provide an excellent opportunity for young women interested and passionate about these fields to explore exciting career options. Internships allow young professionals to gain work experience, build their professional network, and gain insights into future career paths. Within STEM and Healthcare, internships help illuminate the many career options that often include lesser-known paths. Where and how to find an internship can often be the most significant roadblock for many students, especially for young women navigating a historically male-dominated field. This Runway Roundtable will discuss the internship search, resume and interview tips, and upcoming opportunities to explore. Science Runway Mentors will also discuss their internship experiences, any challenges they faced, and share advice on making the most of a summer STEM/healthcare internship.
