Where did you grow up?
Jamaica, NY (Queens)
Who was your favorite teacher, and why?
One of my favorite teachers was Monsieur Jacques Houis. He was my high school French teacher. I enjoyed learning from him because he was sincerely interested in each student’s development academically and as a human being. He would ask students how they were and wanted to better understand them as people beyond just teaching them in a classroom.
What inspired you to pursue a career in STEM/Healthcare?
I grew up in a neighborhood where many of my family members and neighbors would complain about the quality of healthcare services they received at local health care centers and clinics. The prevailing thought was that many of the local healthcare providers (HCPs) didn’t live in the neighborhood nor did they seem to self-identify as members of the various racial and ethnic groups currently living in the community. This was an important detail for many of my family members because they felt like certain concerns and needs would not be understood nor addressed in a proper manner culturally and clinically. Knowing that family members didn’t feel comfortable to discuss intimate health issues with their HCP due to mistrust, perceived misunderstandings, or fear of judgement encouraged me to get more involved in healthcare and clinical research.
What were your moments of fear/challenges in your career?
I have been consistently challenged and, in some way, indirectly expected to explain or justify my presence when involved in leadership positions. My greatest fear is not that other people will doubt my abilities. Unfortunately, even as a leader on numerous high-profile and important research projects, this is what I have consistently encountered. My greatest fear is when I start to doubt my expertise and abilities because then I am not able to perform my best work. Despite others’ perceptions, you are still places in a privileged position as a leader where someone’s (and sometimes many people’s) health outcomes are dependent upon your work and actions.
What are some of the innovations in science that you are most excited about?
Right now, I am most excited about how machine learning can be used for predictive analytics in clinical decision making and clinical research.
What’s next for you?/What would you like to do when you “grow up’? (retire, etc.)/ what is something you hope to accomplish in the future?
I am still deciding that. For right now, I am content in my position and envision I will assume more responsibilities leading clinical research efforts in pharma.
