Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Cairo, Egypt, and moved to Canada when I was 16.
Who was your favorite teacher, and why?
High-school chemistry teacher. I loved his teaching; he knew we all have unique ways of understanding, and he taught things differently to accommodate that. He always ensured that class and labs were fun, interesting, and engaging.
What inspired you to pursue a career in STEM/Healthcare?
I have always had a passion for/been driven by science, math, and technology. As a child, I was always curious about how and why things worked; But to be honest, I didn’t know how I wanted to turn that passion into a career. It was during my undergraduate studies that I was offered a research job, which I loved. This experience ultimately led me to pursue graduate school.
What do you do in your current role/career?
I am currently a doctoral student working on the development of hydrogel-based technologies for 3D bioprinting and haptic applications.
What were your moments of fear/challenges in your career?
One of my fears/challenges is stepping out of my comfort zone. However, I have learned that taking that step to explore new opportunities, though it initially feels a bit scary, has ultimately paved the way for some of the most transformative experiences in my journey.
What are some of the innovations in science that you are most excited about?
Advancements and innovations in bioprinting and biofabrication technologies that aim to advance and revolutionize tissue engineering and healthcare systems.
What’s next for you?/What would you like to do when you “grow up’? (retire, etc.)/ what is something you hope to accomplish in the future?
I am currently in the midst of my graduate studies journey. I’m still exploring possibilities for what I can do after graduate school, but I haven’t decided/narrowed it down yet! I love science, travel, and making a positive impact on people’s lives. Ideally, I would like my future career to integrate all three elements.
